Day 11: Tsuruoka to Niigata, 88.4 miles

160 yen apiece, that's a quid a squid.

Had an amazing day today, 70 uninterrupted miles of Route 375 along the West coast overlooking the Sea of Japan with very little traffic. This stretch of coast is very traditional, no modern shops or gas stations, just fishing villages. Reaching Niigata was a bit disappointing. I was excited to get here as it was the first big city since Sapporo but was turned away from two hotels. 150 room business class hotel full on a Friday night? "Er, no non-smoking room." That's okay. "Er sorry, no room. Room full". A bit of Xenophobia happens from time to time. The women are lovely though. That compensates.

Squid fishing boat. The boats go out at night and they switch on those lights making the squid think it's daytime and come to the surface.

2 holes. Take yer pick.

70 miles of uninterrupted coast road. Cyclists paradise.

Typical house in this area of Northern Honshu. Everyone seems to grow their own veg.

Not sure who this is but I think he might be one of Buddha's mates. Very big statue. Beware of false idols!

Why can't I stay at your hotel?

Your pictures are wonderful! Thanks for brightening my dreary morning! Sorry you couldn't get into a hotel--we had some strange issues like that too--there are just places they don't allow gai-jin (foreigners) to go.
